- more to follow next weekend
One of several hen and stag
party groups in Carrick last weekend. Carrick
has become a nationally known venue for Hen & Stag
parties thanks to the facilities, attractions and available
accommodation organised for participants. Every weekend,
Carrick town centre bars and restaurants are chosen
venues for partygoers as well as nearby attractions
like Lough Key Forest Park etc. We will try to have
regular weekend photo updates for you from Murtagh's,
the Landmark, Dunne's, Kiss, Moon River, Boda Borg etc... The commendable organisational
skills of local business owners have turned the town
into a weekend holiday resort for willing, eager
and fun-seeking groups of revellers. Sure, there are
locals who say "they have taken over our town",
but the facts remain ... Carrick has a thriving business
and partygoers love the place!

I've cracked it !!!
I really like the food served in our
local Chinese restaurants. We all know the procedures
involved, but I have always wondered how the sauces
are made. No "Amoy", "Blue Dragon"
"Sharwoods" or other supermarket prepared
sauce captures the 'real' Chinese restaurant taste for
anything but Sweet & Sour. Now, following years
of wondering and experimenting, I've cracked it!, I
can make the perfect sauce for my Chinese / European
Beef Black Pepper ...onwards now to Black Bean etc etc!

 One
of the Hen Party groups in Carrick on Saturday 28th
April
Carrick-on-Shannon
is one of few towns that can boast that it is becoming
a destination for a growing number of visitors from
all parts of the country and further afield. Apart from
its shopping, hotel and leisure attractions,
Carrick welcomes many as the undisputed "Hen Night
Capital of Ireland". Every weekend, groups of hen
party goers arrive and give the town a special atmosphere
with their presence, good humour and attitude. Last
Saturday I spent pleasant time in Murtagh's Bar taking
photos of one group of 'hens'. I am hoping to make a
regular feature of Hen Night Photos here on realcarrick.com,
and will visit different venues around town taking photos for you. Saturday

Frank Feighan TD responds to Roscommon HAC
Shannonside FM Radio report:
Roscommon South Leitrm TD Frank Feighan responded to
the Hospital Action Committee following the TV3 interview
last week where he spoke of how his decision to vote
with the Government to close Roscommon's A&E led
to a threat to his life. Deputy Feighan says threats
were made the night before as well as on the day of
the vote where he says there was an element in the crowd
that did NOT have the interests of the hospital at heart.
He also says he reported a specific incident of a man
threatning to 'put a bullet in his head' to the Gardai
but the issue was later resolved after the man apologised.
The Roscommon TD said HAC Chairman John McDermott was
not with him at all times on the day of the vote, and
he adds he is happy to furnish Mr McDermott with the
name and address of the man who threatened him, if he
wants it.
Frank Feighan TD on TV
Frank Feighan TD gave a harrowing account on TV3, of bad behaviour and criminal intent towards
him. The abuse stems from the fact that Feighan did
not resign his seat over the Roscommon Hospital issue.
I have spoken with some of those involved in the Hospital
campaign and they were appalled that Feighan was treated
so badly.
Boardwalk Cafe wins Award
The Landmark Hotel's Boardwalk Cafe
has just been awarded 'Best Casual Dining, Leitrim'

Management thanks all customers for their nominations
and are delighted to bring this award home to Carrick-on-Shannon!!
A "new" role for the Catholic
Church?
God alone knows if the Church of
Rome will properly apologise and take full action for
the sins of its pastors. Meanwhile mankind is in a dangerous
place, and I am unaware of a guiding/calming/inspirational
role coming from the Catholic Church, or any other Church. World
Recession, Climate Change, Greed, Anger, Addiction,
Terrorism, Drugs, Murders, Stabbings are the content
making up every news bulletin ...then there is
Clerical Child Abuse. Isn't it time we were 'coached'
or otherwise encouraged to follow the basic precepts we learned in
school "Love Thy God and Love Thy Neighbour"??
MBNA Sold - jobs are secure
Frank Feighan TD has welcomed the purchase
of the Credit Card operations at MBNA, Carrick-on-Shannon by
Apollo Global Management.
The facility serving the Irish Market has been sold
to Apollo, which has confirmed the 200,000 consumer
accounts with a balance of more than 650m will continue
to be managed by 250 staff in Carrick-on-Shannon. This
is extremely positive news for the long-term future
of the plant. "Workers at the MBNA plant have been informed today
about this long-awaited news which will help protect
the 250 jobs at the plant in Carrick-on-Shannon. Apollo
executives have also expressed their own satisfaction
at being able to preserve jobs at this significant employer
in the region. "Todays great news comes following perseverance
of many people, including management and staff. I
have always been personally reassured by the absolute
commitment and dedication of the Minister for Enterprise
Richard Bruton and the IDA to find an appropriate solution
for the facility and staff. Throughout this process, I also pledged my commitment
to staff to leave no stone unturned to protect jobs
and I am delighted that the hard work of all stakeholders
has now paid off. This is a wonderful day for Leitrim
and the wider region." "The next significant challenge now is to safeguard
the other 400 employees managing the UK business at
the plant, which is still being run as a going concern
by Bank of America. That process continues apace to
now safeguard these jobs, concluded Deputy Feighahan
 St.
Patrick's Day Parade 2012
How was your St. Patrick's Weekend?
The weekend in Carrick was action-packed
and apart from some not-so-soft Irish rain at the end
of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, all was well, folks
had a great time and there was plenty to see, do and
enjoy. Have a look through our St. Patrick's Day

Shannon Fast - a Weekend for Gerry
Gerry Mc Cormack, of Proglass Windscreens,
will undertake a 48 hour fast with a difference
from Friday 16th to Sunday afternoon. Gerry will be
hoisted 50 metres above the Shannon in a glass cube at
the Car Park close to Moon River. Gerry will enter the
cube's roof hatch at noon on Friday. A crane, sponsored
by Terry Hunter of ICCH, will lift its precious cargo over
the Shannon and it will remain there until Sunday
afternoon. Gerry hopes to raise sufficient funds
to help a rebuilding project in Haiti dealing with the
devastating 2010 earthquake damage.

MBNA may have a buyer!
New York based private equity firm Apollo
Global Management may be close to buying the MBNA credit
card operation in Carrick-on-Shannon. The Sunday Business
Post reported that the company is about to buy the Irish
Credit Card business of a US bank in a clearly identified
statement, though not naming Bank of America. Apollo
bought the Spanish business of Bank of America last
August and may now be about to buy its Irish
business in Carrick..

The New Apple iPad tablet computer
For all computer geeks, devotees, students and users,
Apple has launched its newest creation, the "New
Apple". Don't rush to your local supplier folks,
the New Apple doesn't go on sale in the UK until Friday
16th March, and probably soon after in Ireland. The
Late Steve Jobs would have been proud of the New Apple,
he said: Innovation distinguishes between a leader
and a follower. Be a yardstick of quality. Some
people aren't used to an environment where excellence
is expected. Your time is limited, so don't waste
it living someone else's life...Don't let the noise
of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your
heart and intuition.

Card Players enjoy Drumderrig House
Every week a group of keen card players
gather at Drumderrig House, Boyle's Private Nursing
Home, for a few hands. Residents and non residents participate.
Recently
Ita Roche, the only lady present, skillfully relieved
the men of their few bob! Paula Cull, owner of Drumderrig
House, says "The fact that non residents join in
is important. We want our residents to feel that they're
part of the community. Just because people are elderly,
it doesn't mean they've stopped living or enjoying their
favourite pastimes." Playing cards, boules, bingo,
keep fit and dancing and music nights are just a few
of the many activities Drumderrig's residents have to
hand.
Bed
Closures for Carrick Hospital
According
to the HSE, ten beds will close in St. Patrick's Hospital,
Carrick-on-Shannon this year. Leitrim Co Cllr Francie
Gilmartin is reported to have said "Minister Reilly
and the HSE should be ashamed of themselves!"

St. Patrick's Hospital - beds
to go
Bed numbers at St. Patrick's Hospital
will be reduced as a cost saver under the HSE West Service
Plan 2012. Beds will also go at Roscommon's Sacred Heart
Hospital and inpatient activity will be reduced
at Roscommon County Hospital. It is good to note however
that day care theatre capacity will be expanded at Roscomnmon
Hospital. Stroke Rehab Units will be developed at Roscommon
Hospital alongside a geriatric service for care
of the elderly
Water Charges
Phil Hogan TD, minister for the Environment
has plans to establish a separate water authority. If
established, 'Water Ireland', will manage water
supplies through the country. As a result it is likely
that water charges will increase alongside a lessening
of the power currently with local Co Councils.
