Mill's Miscellany - Now Open
Mill's Miscellany is a new Carrick business for Miriam Kerins.

Miriam wrote: I  had to start something due to not having enough work to sustain Miriam wrote: I felt there was a need for a good quality vintage store in Carrick and I am specialising in reproduction designer 1950's swing, wiggle and tea dresses and 1940's and 1950's style underwear.  I am also sourcing and  hand choosing gently used pre-loved items of clothing to sell and am asking the good people of Carrick and the area to bring in any items they no longer love anymore. They must be of saleable quality, and we will decide on a price and once sold I will offer them back up to 50 per cent of the final selling price. Contact Miriam at 087 632 1020.

Invest in a family Dog

Roscommon Herald article: "Homeowners are being advised to invest in a family dog to help ward off criminals. The advice was issued this week by a Strokestown councillor as the county braces itself for the closure of three more Garda stations
• According to Fianna Fail’s Cllr Eugene Murphy having a well-trained dog around the house could lead to a dramatic reduction in the number of break-ins. “In my view the reduction in the number of people keeping a well-trained dog in the family home has left it easy for criminals to access homes."

Tourism Ireland Website

Tourism Ireland has spent €3million on a new website that's been made in England -- including €500,000 for the domain name Ireland.com. My first impression of the site is the it is visually drab, dull, confusing and an attempt to copy a "Windows 8" approach ... but I guess we will get used to it.

Carrick-on-Shannon - one of the best

Carrick-on-Shannon has been ranked 18th best town in the country according to a Retail Excellence Ireland survey. The survey named the best 100 towns and cities in Ireland and gave Westport the title of Ireland’s best town, and named Kilkenny Ireland’s best city. Preparations are now well underway for the 400th anniversary celebrations of the town in 2013.

Speed Kills MPG

It's true. Your car's Miles Per Gallon decreases once it gets past its optimal speed. For most cars, this is around 55-60 mph. This means that every time you go over this speed, you're essentially wasting fuel and money - and creating unnecessary greenhouse gases.
• You might be surprised to learn that a slight decrease in your driving speed can significantly reduce your fuel consumption, while only adding a few minutes to your travel time.

Fianna Fáil Senator Mary White says she will work to ensure that all persons aged 66 and over should have access to a personal alarm scheme. "Fianna Fáil has specific recommendations to enhance security for older people. In the wake of the shocking and vicious murder of Eugene Gillespie we will redouble our efforts to see them come into effect."

Carrick's Luxury Cineplex on the Boyle/Sligo Road - Tel: 071 967 2000

Carrick Cineplex is a Premier Leisure Attraction in the area. You will be guaranteed a friendly welcome from Laura and staff as you 'stock up' on Popcorn, Ice Cream etc before enjoying the seated comforts of this Luxury Venue to enjoy the latest Cinema Releases and/or Classic Film Club Choices.
• Recently I was delighted to be there for "Men In Black 3" and "Prometheus" and plan a visit later this week to see "Red Tails". Sure, we may enjoy films on TV, but nothing compares with viewing them on the Big Screen with Stereo Sound in the comfort zone of a dedicated cinema like the Carrick Cineplex.
• Projectionist Peter Toolan tells me "Friends With Kids" with Chris O'Dowd will commence its run on June 29th, and that "Sapphires" with Chris O'Dowd in a lead role will be shown alongside its release date in August.

Card Players enjoy Drumderrig House

Every week a group of keen card players gather at Drumderrig House, Boyle's Private Nursing Home, for a few hands. Residents and non residents participate. Recently Ita Roche, the only lady present, skillfully relieved the men of their few bob!
• Paula Cull, owner of Drumderrig House, says "The fact that non residents join in is important. We want our residents to feel that they're part of the community. Just because people are elderly, it doesn't mean they've stopped living or enjoying their favourite pastimes." Playing cards, boules, bingo, keep fit and dancing and music nights are just a few of the many activities Drumderrig's residents have to hand.
