The Grand Opening of the Christmas Shop at Ardcarne Garden Centres, Boyle & Roscommon Town, this weekend, 2nd and 3rd November. This eagerly awaited event is a great family occasion every year combining hospitality and entertainment with a sense of community. Enjoy a complementary glass of mulled wine and mince pie while soaking up the magical Christmas atmosphere and help support your local Hospice. The Ardcarne Garden Café (Boyle Branch) will be serving a selection of seasonal food, including homemade soups, breads, hot dish of the day and delicious pastries and cakes. Halloween Fundraising Dance
Sean Nós ar an tSionainn will host their annual Fundraising Dance on Bank Holiday Monday 28th October in the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon. Music by some of Ireland's finest musicians including members of the Swallow's Tail and Moylurg Céili bands. All proceeds will go to Vesnova Children's Orphanage Chernobyl. Edwina Guckian will travel and work there in February.
• Huge raffle prizes on the night and prizes for the best dressed ... so don't forget your costume.
• There will be plenty of Sets and Sean Nós with guest performances too.

Carrick misses out on gas line
Carrick-on-Shannon has been excluded from an extension of the Natural Gas Infrastructure "on economic grounds." Carrick Chamber wrote to Minister Pat Rabbitte requesting the extension of the Natural Gas Infrastructure to the county town in the Gas Regulation Bill 2013. [more...]

"100 years of history lost" – Kiltoghert Community
Community devastated after the old creamery building demolished. A committee was set up recently to restore the old creamery after the group found a book written by a local man detailing the happenings at the creamery since the early 1900? Maura Murphy, one of the campaigners for retaining the historic building says the community is gutted after the building was knocked in just 40 minutes on Tuesday. The committee had made contact with the County Council in an effort to prevent these plans by Aurivo Co-Op going ahead but to no avail.

This will be a tremendous conclusion to the Leitrim Equation project and is guaranteed to be a very special event promoting the rich tradition of Leitrim music which is undeniably alive and kicking.

It’s the day after the Budget, and it’s raining!!
• Wine, beer, spirits and cigarettes are all more expensive this morning, as the first of the Budget measures kick in. The National Off-Licence Association is furious about the extra 50c on a bottle of wine, and says it will be taking the issue up with the EU Commission.

Joe Lowe, CEO of Leitrim County Enterprise Board said a creative cluster model created along the Leitrim, Fermangh and Tyrone axis should be rolled out across Europe. Mr. Lowe was speaking at the end of the Harnessing Creativity Showcase and Exhibition, which gave a platform to over 50 creative practitioners with talents ranging from architecture to film, design, photography, music and technology in the cross border region.

Cost of houses powers ahead
The price of houses in Dublin has been powering ahead since the start of the year. Strange as it seems, this argues for a return of the guys known for their high-visibility jackets, builders' boots and breakfast rolls.
Meanwhile in this part of the world:"We are seeing strong evidence that residential property prices are continuing to stabilise, and positive signs of improving confidence, as more of our customers want to buy a home,” says Ita Gray, Branch Manager in Bank of Ireland, Carrick-on-Shannon. Quinn: ‘I never took a penny from anyone’
Leitrim Observer report: Over 1,500 people gathered to cheer on Sean Quinn as he opened the 47th annual Ballinamore Family Festival last Sunday, August 11th. Adrian Smith from the festival committee described Quinn as someone who "never forgot where he came from and who invested and re-invested in his local area". He said the landscape of the Ballinamore would be different "if it wasn’t for people like Sean Quinn creating jobs”. [more...]
Ardcarne Garden Café is Now Open
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Ardcarne Cafe yesterday. The venue, decor, hospitality and food are excellent. During my all-too-short visit I met and chatted with Ronan O'Conghaile, Conor & Ronan Maher, Orla McKeon, Maurice & Anne Gannon, John Cranogue, Fiona Egan, Orla Leydon, Margie Lonergan ... as the Terminator said "I Will Be Back" !!

Leitrim Observer report: A new report due out on cyber bullying this month is to recommend criminal prosecution for those found guilty of the act. The report will propose new laws to compel all schools to introduce disciplinary codes to tackle the misuse of social media and recommends that the current Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act should include specific offences for cyber bullying.
Cookery Demonstration at L. Key Visitor Centre
Eurasia Seafood Broth. This was one of four delicious dishes prepared at the Cookery Demonstration by Shamzuri Hanifa in Lough Key Forest Park Visitor Centre on Wednesday 17th July. Plans to relocate Sliabh an Iarainn Centre
Leitrim County Council has revealed plans to relocate the Centre and redevelop the facility to act as a hub for visitors to the area. The proposals include moving the centre, currenlty located on the top floor of the Old Market House in Drumshanbo, to the ‘Teach Ceoil’ building on the banks of the Acres Lake. Leitrim County Councillors have expressed some concern over proposals to relocate the Sliabh an Iarainn Centre.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are urging motorcyclists, scooter and moped users to bike safely on the roads following a rise in motorcycle casualties in 2013. To date, 13 motorcyclists have died on Irish roads compared to eight motorcyclists and two pillion passengers up to the same date last year. Motorcyclists account for almost 14% of road deaths so far this year, despite making up less than 2% of the country's total vehicle fleet.

The scourge of suicide
The scourge of suicide is now taking more than one life a day in Ireland, it has emerged. Figures show some 252 people have taken their own lives so far in Ireland in 2013. That works out at an average of some 42 per month — well above one a day.
